Getting Started with 1Password

Getting Started with 1Password

When you’re invited to 1Password, the goal is simple: get you set up and securely accessing the tools you need — with as little friction as possible.

This guide walks you through:

  • Accepting your invite

  • Setting up your account

  • Installing 1Password on your computer

  • Using it from your browser

Step 1: Accept Your Invite

  1. Look for an email from 1Password with the subject: You’ve been invited to join your team on 1Password.

  2. Click the Join Now button.

  3. You’ll be redirected to a login screen.

Step 2: Sign In with Microsoft

We use Single Sign-On (SSO) — you do not need to create a separate 1Password account or remember another password.

  1. Click Sign in with Microsoft.

  2. Enter your company email address and password if prompted.

  3. Approve your MFA prompt (Microsoft Authenticator or your normal method).

  4. If this is your first login, you’ll be asked to name your device. Pick something clear like Susan's Work Laptop.

You’re now in!

No Secret Key Needed
Because we use SSO, you won’t need to save or enter a Secret Key. You’ll verify new devices using an existing trusted device.

Step 3: Install the App (Optional but Recommended)

You can use 1Password entirely from the browser, but we recommend installing the desktop app for best performance.

  • Download the app for macOS or Windows

  • Install it like any normal program

  • Open the app and click Sign In with Microsoft

This app allows quicker access to saved passwords, integration with your system clipboard, and easier unlocks.

Step 4: Add the Browser Extension

To autofill logins and passwords as you browse, install the 1Password browser extension:

Once installed:

  1. Click the extension in your browser toolbar

  2. Sign in with Microsoft again

  3. Approve from your existing trusted device or the 1Password desktop app

Your First Vaults

When your account is ready, you’ll see:

  • Private vault: Just for you

  • Shared vaults: Based on your department or role

Anything in a Shared vault can be viewed and used by the team members who have access — and only those team members.
