Daily Operations Guide

XProtect Smart Client is your security camera monitoring software. Whether you're managing a retail store, apartment building, or office space, this guide covers the essential features you'll use day-to-day to keep your property secure.

Getting Started

Logging In

  1. Launch XProtect Smart Client from your desktop

  2. Enter your username and password

  3. Select your server (if prompted)

  4. Click Log In

If you can't log in or don't have credentials, contact your IT administrator or security system installer.

Live View - Real-Time Monitoring

Live View is where you'll spend most of your time, watching cameras as events happen in real-time.

Opening Live View

  1. Click the Live tab at the top of the screen

  2. Use the Views pane on the left to select camera layouts

  3. Common view names might be "Main Entrance," "All Exterior," or "Store Floor"

Essential Live View Features

  • Digital Zoom: Scroll your mouse wheel over any camera to zoom in/out

  • Full Screen Camera: Double-click any camera to expand it to full screen

  • Quick Full Screen: Press F11 to enter full-screen mode for the entire application

  • Camera Status: Small icons show if cameras are recording or if there are connection issues

💡 Live View Tips

  • You cannot rewind or review past footage in Live View - use Playback for that

  • If a camera shows black or appears disconnected, note the camera name and contact your IT support

  • Motion indicators (if configured) will highlight areas where movement is detected

Playback - Reviewing Recorded Footage

When you need to investigate an incident or review what happened earlier, use Playback mode.

Opening Playback

  1. Click the Playback tab at the bottom

  2. Select the same camera views as in Live mode

  3. Use the timeline at the bottom to navigate through recorded footage

Understanding the Timeline

The timeline shows when recordings are available:

  • Light-red bars: Indicate standard recordings

  • Red bars: Indicate recordings with motion detected

  • Gray gaps: No footage available (camera offline, no recording scheduled)

  • Vertical line: Shows current playback time

Playback Controls

  • ▶️ Play/Pause: Standard video controls

  • ⏩ Speed Controls: Adjust playback speed using dropdown or buttons

  • ⏮️ Jump Back: Quickly rewind 10 seconds

  • 🔁 Sync: Multiple cameras play synchronized for the same time period

Navigating Recordings

  • Click and drag the timeline to jump to specific times

  • Mouse scroll wheel over timeline to zoom in/out on time periods

  • Timeline controls to play forward/backward at different speeds

📌 Timeline Bookmarks

If someone has added bookmarks (like "Delivery 3:52pm"), you'll see bookmark icons on the timeline. Click them to jump directly to important events.

Key Features for Daily Operations

Viewing Multiple Cameras

  • All camera views can display multiple cameras simultaneously

  • Playback is synchronized by default - all cameras show the same time

  • You can focus on individual cameras while keeping others visible

Digital Zoom

  • In Live View: Scroll mouse wheel over any camera

  • In Playback: Same mouse wheel zoom works on recorded footage

  • Zoom Reset: Double-click the camera to return to normal view

Taking Screenshots

  1. Right-click on any camera view

  2. Select Snapshot or look for a camera icon

  3. Screenshots are typically saved to your desktop or a designated folder

Common Daily Tasks

🔍 Investigating an Incident

  1. Switch to Playback mode

  2. Select views covering the area of interest

  3. Navigate to the approximate time using the timeline

  4. Use playback controls to review the footage

  5. Take screenshots of important moments if needed

👀 General Monitoring

  1. Stay in Live mode during business hours

  2. Monitor high-traffic areas like entrances, cash registers, or common areas

  3. Switch between different view layouts as needed

  4. Watch for motion indicators or unusual activity

  1. Go to Playback mode

  2. Click on the date/time display above the timeline

  3. Enter the specific date and time you want to review

  4. Navigate using playback controls

  1. Switch to Playback mode immediately after the incident

  4. Note exact times and camera angles that captured important details
