External Display Troubleshooting

External Display Troubleshooting

If your second screen isn’t working quite right — or at all — don’t panic. Most issues with monitors, projectors, or docking station displays are simple to resolve with a few quick checks.

First Steps

  • Is the display turned on?
Make sure it has power and is set to the right input (e.g., HDMI, DisplayPort).

  • Check the cables.
Try unplugging and reconnecting both ends — laptop and monitor.

  • Use the correct display mode:
Press Windows Key + P and select one:

    • Duplicate – Same content on both screens

    • Extend – More screen space

    • Second screen only – Use only the external display

Common Fixes

  • Monitor says “No Signal”?

    • Make sure the dock (if used) is properly connected to your laptop.

    • Try plugging the display directly into the laptop to isolate the issue.

  • Nothing happens when plugged in?

    • Reboot your computer while the external display is connected.

    • Try another cable or port if available.

  • Wrong screen resolution or layout?

    • Right-click the desktop > Display settings

    • Scroll down to Display Resolution or drag monitors into the correct layout.

  • Touchscreen acting weird on the wrong display?

    • Open Control Panel > Tablet PC Settings to reassign touchscreen input.

Pro Tips

  • Use manufacturer drivers.
Graphics and docking drivers from Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. often work better than generic ones.

  • Display not waking after sleep?
Disconnect and reconnect the display, or use Ctrl + Win + Shift + B to refresh.

  • Frequent flickering or display dropouts?
Replace the cable — it’s often the culprit.
