Using Your Work Computer at Home (Dos and Don’ts)

Using Your Work Computer at Home (Dos and Don’ts)

Taking your work computer home? Great — just don’t treat it like your personal Netflix machine. Here’s a quick guide to keep your device (and your company) secure.

✅ DO

Use It Only for Work

Stick to business apps, work email, Teams, and any software we’ve provided. Keep the TikTok rabbit holes on your personal device.

Connect Securely

Use company-approved VPN or cloud tools if required. Don’t bypass them — they’re there for a reason.

Keep It Updated

Leave your laptop plugged in and online overnight when possible. This ensures it receives updates, patches, and security fixes.

Lock When Not in Use

Especially if others are around. Lock it (Windows+L or Control+Command+Q on Mac) anytime you walk away.

❌ DON’T

Let Others Use It

It’s tempting to let your kid use the laptop for homework or YouTube, but this can compromise security or even violate compliance rules.

🧹 Install Personal Software

Avoid installing random apps, games, or browser extensions. They can create security gaps or conflict with business tools.

🕵️‍♂️ Work on Public Wi-Fi (Unprotected)

If you're at a coffee shop or hotel, use work VPN. Never trust an open Wi-Fi network with sensitive data.

🖥 Shared or Family Computers?

Don't use a personal or shared family device for work unless explicitly approved. Company systems are secured and monitored — your home PC isn’t.
